Job Position Description:

Are you passionate about supporting children and families experiencing housing instability? Community Action is seeking a Children and Family Engagement Specialist to join our Family Shelter team. In this role, you will plan, coordinate, and facilitate engaging educational, recreational, and family-centered activities designed to foster wellness, resilience, and strong family relationships while residents transition to permanent housing.

Abbreviated Duties List:

  • Plan and facilitate developmentally appropriate educational, recreational, and cultural activities for children and families residing in the shelter.
  • Develop workshops and classes on topics such as parenting, financial literacy, wellness, nutrition, and life skills based on resident needs.
  • Provide homework assistance, literacy support, and age-appropriate learning opportunities for school-aged children.
  • Create a monthly Family Enrichment Calendar and maintain resource bulletin boards highlighting free or low-cost community opportunities in Washington County.
  • Cultivate relationships with schools, libraries, volunteers, and local businesses to expand enrichment programming at the shelter.
  • Observe children's developmental needs, coordinate seasonal celebrations, and collaborate with Housing Stability staff to support residents' long-term goals.

Abbreviated Requirements:

  • Associate degree in Education or Family Studies plus a minimum of one year of child care experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, work independently, and demonstrate creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Intermediate skills in office technology, including Microsoft Suite.

What Will Make You Stand Out:

  • Background in physical education, recreation, or the arts.
  • Experience working in social services with low-income children and families.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish), written and verbal.
  • Experience in social service programs serving low-income individuals in Washington County.
